Review: ‘You’re Next’ by Gregg Hurwitz

Fans of Linwood Barclay will love this well thought-out thriller.

‘You’re Next’ starts off with Mike, a successful businessman, making a dodgy decision which then appears to put him and his perfect family in danger. There is a fair amount of setting up involved in the story initially but I think it’s important for the reader to understand just how perfect Mike’s family life was until everything goes wrong. Mike and his wife Annabell have carved out a lovely existence, quite in opposition to Mike’s childhood, for their daughter Kat but quickly home becomes the most dangerous place to be.

The narrative is strong and Hurwitz seems to judge the right amount of information to give and the most effective place in the plot to make the big reveal. I have to admit, I was surprised by the reason behind the campaign against Mike. It was very original.

The language used is slightly more adventurous than your usual thriller and the themes are also quite unusual. The violence in the story is so believable that I wouldn’t recommend reading this over dinner.

All in all, a very compelling thriller.
