Review: ‘When God Was a Rabbit’ by Sarah Winman

Despite rave reviews, I avoided reading this book for quite some time as I feared the title implied some religious theme. I was wrong, God is indeed the name of young Elly’s rabbit. The best way in which I can describe this book is modern family saga – the story spans decades in the twentieth century, following Elly and her brother Joe. Joe is Elly’s confidante, best friend and saviour. He’s the keeper of her secrets and her protector and the story follows how two important friendships influence the direction of their lives.

The characters are impressively written and Winman paints a very believable picture of a dysfunctional but loving family. Winman tackles lots of controversial and emotional subjects with aplomb. The story is beautifully written and it’s easy to care about the characters, despite their flaws. The human-ness of the characters is what makes this story so compelling.

I look forward to reading more stories by Sarah Winman.
