Another of my writerly friends, Dan Smith, has taken the time to share his review 2012 with us.
2012 has been a great year for you. Do you have a favourite memory professionally?
Selling my children’s book was very exciting. I loved writing it and it’s a good story, so I’m pleased it’ll be out there for people to read in 2013.
And how about a favourite moment from 2012 generally?
I don’t usually watch sport on the television, but The Olympics was a great event that made me feel proud of my country. And there was the royal wedding too, which meant a very British street party with bunting and trestle tables and sandwiches. I met people I didn’t even know existed, so I’d say that’s pretty good.
Favourite book in 2012?
That’s a tough one; I’ve read quite a few. ‘The Game of Thrones’ series has been consistently entertaining so far and ‘The Sisters’ Brothers’ stands out for me. I also read ‘My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece’ which was very good.
Favourite film of 2012?
Another tough one – I watch a lot of films. ‘Looper’ was great and has some memorable performances in it (as long as you can get past the weird prosthetics on Joseph Gordon-Levitt). ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘Avengers Assemble’ were also both great films – one dark and brooding, the other bright and brash and full of colour.
Favourite song of the year?
‘Gangnam Style’, obviously. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have some horse dancing to do….
Any downsides for you in 2012?
I try not to think about the downside of things.
Are you making resolutions for 2013?
No. I never make resolutions – I don’t really understand the whole idea of it. If there’s something you feel you should or shouldn’t be doing . . . well, why do you just get on with it?
What are you hoping for from 2013?
Happiness and health for my family and friends. Some good book sales would be nice too.
